Development of 200MW from Methane Gas between Rwanda and DRC

Project Description

Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo have agreed to commission a feasibility study for the joint development of 200MW of power from methane gas from Lake Kivu, which straddles their common border. A Memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed by the two countries, but no commitments have yet been made for development of the project.

Objectives:

  • Increasing installed capacity for each country
  • Reducing risks associated with methane gas in Lake Kivu
  • Exploiting the shared resource of Lake Kivu

PROJECT LOCATION

The project will be implemented on Lake Kivu, straddling the common border between Rwanda and the DRC
