Construction of 287MW Ruzizi IV Hydropower Project
Project Description
The power plant will be set on the Ruzizi River, straddling the common border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is about 5km, as the crow flies, west of the town of Bugarama, Rusizi District, in Rwanda’s Western Province.
Ruzizi IV is near three other hydroelectric power stations along River Ruzizi, namely Ruzizi I, II and III.
This power plant will be the fourth in a cascade of power plants on the Ruzizi River with installed capacity of 287MW, benefiting Burundi, DRC and Rwanda. The power generated will be equally shared between three countries.
Objective and rationale for the project:
It is a regional project that will serve three countries – Rwanda, Burundi and DRC. The project will provide electricity to millions of households, as well as industry from small and medium-sized enterprises and to large companies, thereby improving the living conditions of the regional population. Improved and more reliable access to electricity will improve the quality of basic social service delivery and enhance security.
