Unifying the Islands by Sea

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

This programme has the following objectives:

• – Development of tourism and trade between islands
• – Reduced transport times
• – Establishment of a maritime transport company providing public services
• – Easy, safe and increased intra-island trade
• – Reduced risk of rapid and accelerated road degradation
• – Accelerated socio-economic development
• – Improved safety and sustainability of informal maritime transport
• – Exploiting the potential of the fishing company

Technical description:

• – Establishment of a national maritime transport operator
• – Establishment of a company with a 40% state shareholding
• – Establishment of rail links and RoPax (mix of passengers and cargo loaded by means of rolling stock) links at a future date
• – Temporary facilities in the main ports of the three islands
• – Construction of secondary ports in the three islands
• – Construction of a Maritime Safety Centre in the port of Moroni
• – Relaunching the activities of the fishing plant

AVAILABILITY OF PRE-FEASIBILITY STUDIES, FEASIBILITY STUDIES, AND OTHER STUDIES:

– EUR 15.5 million for the establishment of a shipping company with ferries and RoPax vessels

– EUR 1 million for temporary facilities

– EUR 33.08 million for connecting ports

– EUR 3 million for the Maritime Safety Centre

– EUR 10 million for the relaunch of the national fishing company

ESTIMATED COST OF THE PROJECT:

EUR 62.58 million
