Promotion and Development of the Agricultural Sector

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The main objective of this project is to build modern and sustainable agriculture for rural development. The achievement of this objective is based on three major strategies:

• The improvement of agricultural productivity by re-organising the rural production system and promoting irrigation, and the use of improved inputs and mechanization
• Improving the competitiveness of agricultural sectors by strengthening agro-food value chains and the quality management system
• Strengthening the financing framework for the agricultural sector

This project is part of the Emerging Comoros Plan.

As part of its emergence strategy, Comoros seeks to boost and modernize the agricultural sector, exploiting all possible avenues that will substantially improve agricultural productivity and competitiveness in the sector, in order to reduce external dependence in this area.

This vision focuses on food security and poverty reduction, given the dominant position of agriculture in the labour force (57%) and its strong contribution to GDP (44%).

The project’s activities include:

• Promoting the “model farm” concept
• Conducting an awareness-raising campaign on the interest and relevance of the approach, as well as the benefits that farmers can derive from it
• Providing support to producers
