PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Development of fully irrigated commercial farm to be available via a  lease for farming investors.

Key Features:

  • 15,600 Ha of irrigated land
  • Implementation in two phases with 5,600 Ha for phase I and 10,000 Ha for phase II
  • Revenue generation from land lease and sale of water, agricultural inputs and services
  • Plots to be leased in 200 Ha increments
  • Initial investment for land development and infrastructure made   by Government of Rwanda (90%) and Netafim (10%)

Gabiro-Kigali -Rwanda

LEAD AGENCY/ PROJECT PROMOTER:

CURRENT STATUS/ STAGE OF  PROJECT:

  • Construction works ongoing of internal roads (61km), bulk water supply, project assets compensation and community resettlements as well as project electrification
  • Selection criteria for land allocation finalized

ACTIONS REQUIRED/ IMPLEMENTATION ARRANGEMENTS/ CONTRACT TYPE:

  • Leasing land for commercial farming
  • Acquiring government shares (negotiable)
  • Services related to agriculture activities at the site
  • Contract farming with the community

AVAILABILITY OF PRE-FEASIBILITY STUDIES, FEASIBILITY STUDIES, AND OTHER STUDIES:

Feasibility study completed

ESTIMATED COST OF THE PROJECT:

USD 150 million
