Development of Extensive Zones for Agriculture
Project Description
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The project is led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock
Main activities:
– Identify and secure state lands available for implementing an extensive farming system to supply local processing industries, to create jobs and to increase rural population incomes
– The identified zones are called ‘Zones for Agricultural Emergence’.
– The project aims to develop partnerships with investors to use land to engage in profitable and sustainable agribusiness activities. However, investors are encouraged to develop infrastructure such as roads, rural tracks, ports and energy (PPP).
– The project will also help youth entrepreneurship by promoting ‘green land title’
PROJECT LOCATION:
220,000 Ha have been identified to date across Madagascar
Land that is suitable for different types of cultivation and breeding is needed, with agro-processing.
LEAD AGENCY/ PROJECT PROMOTER:
Project led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and promoted in collaboration with The Economic Development Board of Madagascar (EDBM)
CURRENT STATUS/ STAGE OF PROJECT: In progress: lands are being identified and land tenure security is being addressed. The Ministry has already received some offers of investment.
ESTIMATED COST OF THE PROJECT:
USD 200 million
INVESTMENT REQUIRED:
The required investment amount depends on the agribusiness activities that will be established in the zone. The investor must define activities and budget to set up the business.
