Development of Coffee Culture

Project Description

Coffee exports from Burundi contribute significantly to GDP. In 2020, coffee accounted for 21.8% of export revenue. In 2022, it was 25%, making it a significant source of foreign exchange for the country.

Coffee’s price on the international market depends on several factors, including quality which must be maintained at all links in the value chain, from production to processing.

The coffee sector is under state control from the nursery to export, including supervision of coffee growers throughout the country. Private companies involved in processing and exporting coffee are also co-ordinated by the state body ODECA, which grants various authorizations, export documents, licences etc. Cooperatives also operate in the sector.

The state’s Agricultural and Administrative Technical Services is represented up to hill level and its management role has begun to be felt in increasing production. The state, through ODECA, should:

  • make available inputs and equipment to coffee growers;
  • work on certification;
  • intensify state industrial blocks in the provinces and provide technical support to public entities (FDNB, municipalities and schools) and private operations (cooperatives, individuals, associations, churches, etc.) that have plantations or want to start them.
