Constructing a New International Airport

Air transport in Burundi is less developed than in other East African Community states but has a relatively high growth rate (14% per year). Annual passenger numbers have increased from almost 60,000 in 2001 to 245,000 in 2022 yet Burundi has only one international airport located in Bujumbura. A new airport – Bugendana International Airport – is under development in the center of the country near Gitega.

This will provide options in the event of aircraft being diverted from Melchior Ndadaye International Airport in Bujumbura or that airport becoming inoperative.

• Specific project objectives: Ensure Bugendana airport has modern infrastructure to meet ICAO international standards for safety, security and air transport facilitation
• Ensure the mobility of people and the flow of goods and merchandise at national, regional, and international levels by air
• Facilitate tourism development.

Deliverables:

• An airport platform with an area of ​​8,700,000m²;
• Necessary infrastructure built and equipment installed.
