Project Description

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The project seeks to create sustainable partnerships between farmers, agri companies and the private sector to develop value chains in key crops, particularly tomatoes, potatoes and onions. Irrigation facilities cover over 30,000 Ha in the country. Of this, over 5,000 Ha will be available for vegetables, fruit and other crops. The required company(ies) will invest in processing facilities with farmers and outgrowers providing the raw materials.

The processing facility should be able to absorb at least 20,000 MT of tomatoes and 10,000 MT potatoes per annum. The project will provide sustainable livelihoods and improve the income of at least 4,000 farming households, improve the local economy, and contribute to national GDP.

At full production, the project will provide an income of at least SZL 60 million (USD 5 million) per annum to farmers, contribute to the economy and taxes through exports, employ over 100 workers and provide good investment returns.

CURRENT STATUS/ STAGE OF PROJECT:

The country has invested significantly in downstream irrigation, with irrigation facilities covering over 30,000 Ha.

ACTIONS REQUIRED/ IMPLEMENTATION ARRANGEMENTS/ CONTRACT TYPE:

The National Agricultural Marketing Board will provide support when setting up the facility and will also prepare farmers to meet production requirements by providing technical support, certification, and other logistics, if required.
