Kabonga Port Construction

The mission of the Burundi Maritime and Port Authority is to regulate and develop ports and inland waterway transport in the country in accordance with Decree No. 100/118 of 27 March 2023. To promote maritime transport and reduce the costs of transporting goods for both import and export, facilitating trade flows and promoting passenger transport, the Authority decided to construct the Port of Kabonga.

Overall project objective: To drive economic growth by facilitating trade between Burundi and the subregion and beyond.

Specific project objectives:

• Facilitate the mobility of goods and people by lake
• Boost trade between Burundi and the subregion and beyond
• Reduce transportation costs
• Create a hub for trade between Burundi, the DRC and Tanzania
• Develop tourism and connect the ports – Terminals A and B.
